21st Century Learners

The Australian Curriculum recognises the importance that ICTs have in students learning, stating that "in a digital age, and with rapid and continuing changes in the ways that people share, use, develop and communicate with ICT, young people need to be highly skilled in its use". This idea is supported by many teachers from all over the world and technology integration is being strongly urged in a number of professional networks.

Candace Boerema is a teacher who regularly uses Twitter to engage with her students. Using Twitter will allow students to participate, share information and contribute ideas in a way that is already relevant to their lives.

Students at Freehold High School have been using Skype to engage self-directed learning and establish connections with other students, teachers and professionals from around the world.

Students at George Middle School create a Blog that parents and other students are able to interact with, whilst also learning about online copyright laws, privacy acts and personal online safety.

YouTube has been used by Franklin Community High School to engage with the wider community about a number of topics. Podcasts have also been integrated into school learning. These opportunities are providing opportunities for students to make a positive impact on society.

This particular Year 8 SOSE class has already exhibited a keen interest in technology, with all students participating in a number of social media forums in their own time. This interest in technology can really facilitate a more engaging, relevant and globalised learning experience that will help students develop certain skills proven to be fundamental for success in the 21st Century.

The way that schools are teaching is changing. Students in this class already have knowledge of a number of different technologies, integrating these into the class will unlock the potential for greater knowledge, broader connections and proactive learning.

Student's lack of attention in class can be remedied with the use of technologies that not only interest students, but that are also relevant to their lives. This will ultimately enable better grade results and increased learning, benefiting student performances and achievement levels.
